Bondage Dolls This exhibit features Jim Towns's unmatchable assemblage pieces. Towns works in a striking black-and-white paint technique in which the contours and shapes of the human figure are highlighted as though lit by bright lights. The interplay of shadow and light suggests the human form in a stark yet sensual manner. These pliable forms are then combined with rough industrial ware-ragged wood, wire, nails, and other found objects. His contrast of the voluptuous human form against the hard edges of metal and wood results in a compelling combination of man and machine, of the physical and industrial. His figures, says City Paper art critic Alice Winn, suggest "sexuality as a mystery beyond good and evil, love and sanity-a resource for breaking through the limits of consciousness.
Towns's work was exhibited in a group show at Blue Ruin in February to favorable response.
"He is one of the most promising artists Pittsburgh has to offer. He has truly broken ground on a unique style and technique; no one is doing work like he is." -Tamara Moore, Blue Ruin Gallery
