Blue Ruin Gallery is a woman-owned venue founded in 2000 as an alternative gallery space. Its aim then and now is to serve as a venue for freedom of expression through the fine arts and photography. Working from their belief that art can be both fun and affordable, this niche art gallery has cultivated and established a reputation for quality artwork, professionalism, community service, a unique gallery space, and a devoted following.
The gallery is owned and operated by Tamara Moore and Amy Woodall, who come to the gallery scene with a fresh perspective. Long-time supporters of the arts, both have backgrounds in publishing and the graphic communications industry.
As many artists struggle against public perception of art focusing on the body or themes of sexuality and alternative lifestyle, even traditional nudes and figure studies, they in turn struggle to find a bricks-and-mortar venue in which to share their work with the public. Blue Ruin strives to bring this form of valid artistic expression to the public, focusing on art that emphasizes the human form, art that looks at the varieties of intimate human expression, and art that expresses sensuality on both physical and emotional levels.
To this end, in its first year of business, Blue Ruin established itself as an award-winning gallery, having been voted “Best Gallery of 2001” by In Pittsburgh newsweekly readers. Likewise, that year Pittsburgh magazine and the Pittsburgh Urban Magnet Project (PUMP) named both curators among Pittsburgh’s influential “40 Under 40” for their unique vision and the impact their gallery has had on the city’s cultural scene.

Blue Ruin exhibits quality art and photography by local, national, and international artists. Visitors have the opportunity to view artwork they often cannot see in more mainstream art galleries and add to their collections by purchasing them. Exhibits are held on a monthly basis, with a new exhibit opening approximately every five to six weeks. Opening night receptions allow the community an opportunity to meet the artist and the artist to learn more about his/her audience.
Blue Ruin doesn’t limit its categorization of arts to a specific medium or to simple “art on the walls.” Past exhibits have included a wide array of media (digital and traditional film-based photography, sculpture, pen and ink, etchings, mixed media, paintings, watercolor, illustration, collage, furniture, celtic design, video, assemblage) and themes (feminist, fetish, gay and lesbian, classic nudes and figure studies, literary, fashion illustration, comic book and pinup art, book illustration, simulacra, advertising satire). Additionally, Blue Ruin welcomes several other styles of creative handwork, including t-shirt design, purses and handbags, housewares (glasswares and fabrics), jewelry (handblown glass beads ands metalwork), collectibles, and more.
Even though it specializes in the nature of the art work it displays, every exhibit is different, and Blue Ruin tries to cater to the tastes of a broad spectrum of clients, working to accommodate all interests and price ranges.
Blue Ruin is a consignment-based commercial gallery. We work with you on a commission basis and do not charge an exhibition fee to artists. We are happy to review your work for potential display.
We accept artists on consignment for full solo exhibits, partnered multiple-artist shows (two or more artists), and themed group shows.
If you have an overall exhibit plan in mind, be sure to let us know the full scope of your ideas. Also provide your full contact information — full name, mailing address, email address, phone number — so that we will have you on file for future needs.
Digital files of your artwork are also accepted; send up to five samples for consideration via email.
Response times vary according to our schedules. We may give you a quick response, or we may take additional time for consideration or to wait for an appropriate show slot to open.
Our review process is for exhibit consideration only. We do not perform a critical evaluation of an artist’s portfolio; other galleries may perform this function for a fee.
